Against Sevilla in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, Martial played as the main striker and put in an impressive performance, setting up the second Marcel Sabitzer goal.

Ahead of facing Nottingham Forest on Sunday, Ten Hag said: “For me, he’s best as a centre-forward but I think he can play in more positions.”

Of his future, the manager added: “It’s difficult to say.

“I want him to be because he’s a great player. He definitely has the qualities to play top football. When he’s fit, our team plays better.”

When pressed on if he felt Martial would be at the club next season, Ten Hag added: “From my point of view, yes.”
