FIFA bans Qatar’s Madibo for five matches after breaking leg of Canada’s Kone

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has handed Qatari midfielder Assim Madibo a five-match suspension following a horrific challenge that left Canadian star Ismaël Koné with a broken leg during last week’s Group B fixture.

The incident occurred during Canada’s commanding 6-0 triumph at BC Place, where Madibo was shown a straight red card. Subsequent medical assessments confirmed that Koné, 24, suffered fractures to the tibia and fibula in his left leg. The former Watford midfielder underwent emergency surgery, prematurely ending his tournament on home soil and leaving a massive void in Jesse Marsch’s engine room just as the co-hosts navigate the knockout rounds.

While FIFA classified the suspension under serious foul play, the decision remains subject to appeal. Madibo, visibly distraught following the whistle, reportedly issued a personal apology to Koné after the match.

For Canada, losing Koné strains squad depth ahead of their highly anticipated Round of 32 matchup against South Africa in Los Angeles. Marsch must now reconfigure his midfield blueprint without one of his most dynamic assets.
