“Only One Ronaldo”: Simeone mocks Yamal after Champions League exit

Diego Simeone has reignited his war of words with Lamine Yamal, claiming only Cristiano Ronaldo possesses the mentality to back up pre-match talk with decisive performances.

“Only One Ronaldo”: Simeone mocks Yamal after Champions League exit

The Atlético Madrid manager’s comments follow a high-stakes Champions League quarter-final where Atleti eliminated Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate, despite a 2-1 second-leg loss at the Metropolitano.

While Yamal opened the scoring early on Tuesday night to briefly level the tie, Simeone remained unimpressed by the 18-year-old’s pre-match confidence and “LeBron-inspired” social media posts.

“I thought he was going to create something special today,” Simeone noted sharply, contrasting the teenager’s impact with the “individual difference-maker” he faced for years in Madrid.

The Argentine coach admitted he still holds a unique level of respect for Ronaldo, whom he described as the only player capable of delivering purely on his own terms in big moments.

Simeone’s taunts are not new; earlier this season, he was seen mocking the youngster by gesturing a “3” after Atlético routed Barcelona in a clinical Copa del Rey semi-final.

Despite Yamal’s record-breaking season of 40 goal involvements, Simeone’s Atleti successfully absorbed a late Barcelona onslaught to reach their first Champions League semi-final in nine years.

They now prepare to face either Arsenal or Sporting CP, while Barcelona is left to rue an Eric Garcia red card that ultimately extinguished their European dreams.
