Morocco down Netherlands on penalties shootout to reach last 16

In a heavyweight Round of 32 collision between two of the world’s top-seven ranked sides, Morocco ultimately advanced to the Round of 16, outlasting the Netherlands on penalties after a fierce 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.

The contest was heavily defined by its unrelenting physicality. Walid Regragui’s Atlas Lions created the better early openings. Only a spectacular reflex stop from Dutch keeper Bart Verbruggen denied Neil El-Aynaoui’s goalbound header off an Achraf Hakimi corner, before Verbruggen again intervened to tip Hakimi’s venomous long-range drive over the crossbar.

The Netherlands weathered the storm, dictating possession without finding an opening against an organized Moroccan defense. Their patience finally broke through in the 72nd minute. Substitute Wout Weghorst immediately disrupted the Moroccan backline, flicking a long ball into the path of Crysencio Summerville. The winger rolled a precise cross to Cody Gakpo, who threw himself at the ball to open the scoring. Gakpo’s celebratory tears reflected immense personal grief, coming just days after he and his partner tragically lost their unborn child.

With Ronald Koeman’s side minutes away from progressing under the resilient leadership of Virgil van Dijk, Morocco struck back deep into stoppage time. In the 91st minute, substitute Chemsdine Talbi delivered a pinpoint cross into the penalty area, where an unmarked Issa Diop gleefully headed past Verbruggen to force extra time.

The additional 30 minutes brought further anxiety, with Verbruggen pulling off another world-class, point-blank save to deny Soufiane Rahimi.

When the inevitable penalty shootout arrived, the pressure intensified. El-Aynaoui rattled Morocco’s opening spot-kick off the crossbar, briefly handing the advantage to the Oranje. However, the North Africans recovered their composure flawlessly, converting their remaining penalties while Capitalizing on Dutch errors to seal a famous victory.

It is another historic knockout triumph for Morocco, while the Netherlands return home pondering what might have been.
