PSG move closer to historic Ligue 1 title after win over Saint-Étienne

Paris Saint-Germain moved one step closer to a record-extending 11th Ligue 1 crown in 13 years with a dominant 6-1 comeback victory over Saint-Étienne on Saturday.

PSG’s title celebrations were temporarily put on hold when Monaco edged Nice 2-1 in the late match, keeping the Parisians’ magic number at one with seven games remaining.

“We’ve practically been champions for weeks,” said Enrique, who preferred delaying the coronation for next weekend’s home match against Angers. “Celebrating at the Parc des Princes would mean more to our fans.”

The match at Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium saw an early shock as Lucas Stassin headed Saint-Étienne ahead in the 9th minute. However, Gonçalo Ramos’ penalty before halftime sparked a second-half avalanche of goals. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s solo effort after intercepting a backpass put PSG ahead, followed by braces from Désiré Doué and João Neves before substitute Ibrahim Mbaye completed the rout.

Meanwhile in Monaco, Breel Embolo’s 73rd-minute winner kept the principality club mathematically alive while dealing a blow to Nice’s European aspirations. The result leaves Monaco just one point behind stumbling Marseille in the race for automatic Champions League qualification.

Marseille’s collapse at Reims drew sharp criticism from midfielder Adrien Rabiot: “Some players don’t seem hungry for Champions League football.” Keito Nakamura’s opener and goals from Mamadou Diakhon and Valentin Atangana sealed OM’s fate despite Valentin Rongier’s spectacular consolation strike.

With PSG’s domestic dominance continuing unabated, attention now turns to whether they can cap this transitional post-Mbappé season with potential European success. The Parisians face Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinals next month, offering Enrique’s young squad a chance to prove their growth extends beyond French borders.
