Cristiano Ronaldo has responded positively after Rasmus Hojlund, the Manchester United striker, copied his iconic ‘Siu’ celebration during Denmark’s 1-0 win over Portugal in their UEFA Nations League tie.
Hojlund, who came off the bench to score the decisive goal, paid homage to his idol with the celebration, which Ronaldo witnessed from the center circle.
Following the match, Hojlund clarified that his actions were not meant as disrespect but rather as a tribute to Ronaldo, who has been a significant influence on his career. “It’s for my idol,” Hojlund explained. “It’s not like I’m mocking him or anything. I’ve always said he has a lot of importance to me and my football career.”
Ronaldo, in response, reassured fans and Hojlund alike that he had no issues with the celebration. He expressed understanding of the tribute, stating, “It’s no problem for me. I know it wasn’t out of disrespect. It is not only him who does my celebration around the world. I’m smart enough to understand that. For me, it is an honour. I hope to do it in front of him tomorrow. It will be good.”
Hojlund has been vocal about his admiration for Ronaldo, revealing that the Portuguese star has been a key influence on his development as a player. Growing up, Hojlund idolized Ronaldo, shaping his work ethic and football aspirations around the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Portugal will face Denmark again in the second leg of their Nations League quarter-final, where Ronaldo aims to add to his international silverware, having previously won Euro 2016 and the Nations League in 2019.
