Thomas Tuchel’s attempts to reintegrate Ben White into the England fold took a turbulent turn as the defender was booed by sections of the Wembley crowd during Friday’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay.
White, making his first appearance since a controversial exit from the 2022 World Cup, experienced a “rollercoaster” cameo after being introduced as a 69th-minute substitute.
The Arsenal man initially silenced the jeers by poking home a 71st-minute opener, but the night ended in frustration when he conceded a stoppage-time penalty converted by Federico Valverde.
Tuchel admitted he was “disappointed” by the vocal opposition but insisted the 28-year-old must “take it on the chin” as the squad moves toward the 2026 World Cup.
The German coach was equally frustrated with the officiating, particularly after Ronald Araújo escaped a red card for a reckless challenge that forced Phil Foden off with an injury.
Adding to the medical concerns, Noni Madueke left the stadium in a knee brace, casting doubt over his availability for Tuesday’s second friendly against Japan.
